Passionate controversies have raged over the albino or " white " Doberman pinscher ever since the first albino Doberman was born, in 1976. Over the course of these arguments, huge mountains of misinformation have been thrown in both directions. This site is intended to provide accurate information about albinism in general, and about albino Dobermans in particular. Don't live in ignorance -- learn the facts!

FEW INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

Passionate controversies have raged over the albino or "white" Doberman pinscher ever since the first albino Doberman was born, in 1976. Over the course of these arguments, huge mountains of misinformation have been thrown in both directions. This site is intended to provide accurate information about albinism in general, and about albino Dobermans in particular. Don't live in ignorance -- learn the facts!
Many people ask me questions like "do you hate white Dobermans?" or "do you want to kill white Dobermans?". The answer, of course, is No I don't hate white Dobermans, and No I don't want to kill them. The ones that are already here should be loved and cared for, just the same as any other living creature. I currently live with two albino dobermans myself -- Lily and Blue -- and I would never wish any harm on either one of them!
So -- why have I established this web site? What is my purpose? What do I hope to accomplish?
I have established this web site in order to present accurate information about albino Dobermans to the widest possible audience. My purpose is to provide facts, real-life experiences, and logic to supplant all the wishful thinking, hate-mongering, and emotionality infecting this issue. I hope to educate those people who may have been struck by the unique appearance of the albino Dobermans, but who may not be aware of the problems associated with them.
Some people have asked why I don't add a section to the site to talk about all the wonderful things that albino Dobermans can do. Well, look at it this way -- if I put up a web site about dogs with hip dysplasia, would you expect me to include a section about how wonderful dysplastic dogs can be? No, of course not. A site about dysplasia in dogs would discuss the problems that can be caused by dysplasia, the ways in which dysplasia can be inherited, the contributory risk factors to dysplasia, the reasons why people should not breed for dysplasia, problems reported by owners of dysplastic dogs, and so on. THIS site is about albinism in Dobermans. Therefore, it addresses topics like the problems that can be caused by albinism, the way in which albinism is inherited, the reasons why people should not breed for albinism, problems reported by owners of albinistic dogs, and so on. That should not be a surprise to anyone! Remember -- dysplastic dogs can make wonderful pets -- so can blind dogs, deaf dogs, dogs with liver failure or heart failure or other problems -- but that doesn't mean that we should create MORE dogs with dysplasia or blindness or deafness or any of those other problems. And just because albinistic dogs CAN be good pets, that is NOT a justification for producing MORE dogs with the problems that accompany albinism. We should be breeding to *reduce* problems in the breed -- not creating more!
Other people ask how I can keep pointing out all the problems with albino Dobermans, if I don't hate them. Well, look at it this way -- if I have a diabetic dog, and I tell you all about this dog's problems caused by the diabetes -- for instance, if I talk about this diabetic dog's blindness, and weight problems, and frequent urination, and so on -- would that mean that I hate that poor diabetic dog? Of course not! Being honest about a dog's problems has NOTHING to do with hating it. And if we care about the well-being of these dogs, we MUST be honest with ourselves and with others.

The question I get asked most often is "have you ever even owned a white doberman?" Here's the answer: Yes, I own an albino dobergirl named Lily, and I also live with an albino foster dog named Blue. Thanks for asking!
